The Greater Vancouver Regional District is located in the southwest corner of mainland British Columbia. It is bordered by the Fraser Valley Regional District on the east; the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District on the north; the Sunshine Coast Regional District on the northwest; the Strait of Georgia on the west; and Washington's Whatcom County on the south. Total area: 3292 square kilometers.The largely urban district is comprised of 15 principal cities - Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver, West Vancouver, and White Rock - as well as surrounding villages, islands, and districts, including Anmore, Belcarra, and Bowen Island. It is the most populous regional district with approximately 1.9 million people (1996), roughly half of the province's population.
