Ilulissat Localities Greenland North America

Ilulissat, widely known by its Danish name: Jakobshavn (Jacobs Harbour) is the third largest town in Greenland and home to more than 4500 inhabitants. Located 350 km north of the Polar Circle, it plays an important role in Greenland’s Halibut fishing industry and it’s proximity to the Ilulissat Ice Fjord makes it one of Greenland’s most popular tourist destinations. Ilulissat was also the birth place of Knud Rasmussen, a polar explorer and anthropologist whose first expedition began in 1902. He led several expeditions in the early 1900’s including traveling over the Viscount Melville Sound and crossing the Northwest Passage by dogsled. Today, his house is home to the town museum.
